Jej mel\u00f3dia poch\u00e1dza z ukrajinskej \u013eudovej piesne <em>Shchedryk<\/em>, ktor\u00e1 sa p\u00f4vodne spievala na Nov\u00fd rok. Hudobne ju v roku 1916 spracoval ukrajinsk\u00fd skladate\u013e <strong>Mykola Leontovych<\/strong> (1877 &#8211; 1921) a e\u0161te v tom istom roku v decembri jeho \u00fapravu prv\u00fdkr\u00e1t zaspievali \u0161tudenti na Kyjevskej univerzite.<br \/>\nV USA bola t\u00e1to skladba premierovan\u00e1 5. okt\u00f3bra 1921 v zn\u00e1mej Carniege Hall, kde ju zaspieval <em>Ukrajinsk\u00fd n\u00e1rodn\u00fd zbor<\/em> po\u010das svojho koncertn\u00e9ho turn\u00e9 po Eur\u00f3pe a Amerike. Viano\u010dn\u00fd n\u00e1dych dal skladbe americk\u00fd skladate\u013e <strong>Peter Wilhousky<\/strong> (1902 &#8211; 1978), ktor\u00fd piese\u0148 upravil pre orchester a dal jej nov\u00fd -anglick\u00fd text.
